Biochar Europe has published the fifth edition of its European Biochar Market Report (2025/2026), providing a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the European biochar sector.
The report shows that Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) remains the most advanced and reliable technology for permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in Europe. Although market growth has slowed compared to previous years, new production capacity continues to be added steadily. Across Europe, a total of 205 biochar production plants operated in 2025. Over the course of the year, 28 new plants were installed and commissioned, while eight facilities ceased operations.
Regionally, around 70% of Europe’s production capacity for biochar used in Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) was concentrated in three areas: Germany, the Nordic countries, and Austria and Switzerland. While Germany continues to have the largest production capacity in Europe, its (net) volumes have stagnated.
