Supercritical Report: Rising Demand for High-Quality Biochar

October 2026

The report “The Biochar Supply Crunch – Market Intelligence for H2 2026”, published by Supercritical in September, looks at recent developments in the Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) market. According to the report, sales of biochar carbon removal credits nearly doubled in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year, rising from 1.59 to 2.99 million tonnes of CO₂ removal.

The shift towards long-term offtake agreements is particularly evident, as buyers increasingly move from one-off purchases to multi-year procurement contracts. According to Supercritical, 81% of the supply of high-quality biochar credits had already been committed by July 2026, a threshold that was not reached until October in the previous year. As a result, less supply is available for short-term purchases in the second half of the year, while prices tend to rise.

Supercritical identifies the growing importance of permanent CO₂ removal for corporate net-zero targets, as well as regulatory developments such as the European Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (CRCF), as key drivers of this trend.
